Googlebombs Dont Work Now
A famous story amongst the Internet community is that of a 'Googlebomb' hitting George Bush Jnr's web page a few years ago, causing it to appear #1 on Google for the search term 'miserable failure'. This is no longer the case.
What are Googlebombs?
Google uses the text of incoming links as a key element of its search algorithm, so when other websites link to another website with a term, say 'web designer' the page linked to may rise in the SERPs for that term. Aware of this, many webmasters organised themselves a few years back to link to the president's web page with the link text 'miserable failure' in large enough numbers for his page to appear #1 on Google for that phrase, even though it did not appear at all on the page itself.
Perhaps due to this famous case and subsequent attempts by webmasters to influence their own or other sites' rankings in a similar manner, Google has taken steps to eliminate Googlebombs through various stages of 'detection' and 'diffusion'. Therefore, you may observe that such tricks work for a limited period of time before being discounted.

This overall goal here for Google is to try and ensure that pages only appear high in the SERPs if they are relevant for a given term.
